What is Blockchain?

Do you think blockchain is an opportunity or a threat? In general, comments diverge at two extremes. Some choose to be involved in this technology unconditionally, while others draw dark scenarios. While Bitcoin and Blockchain are linked, they are not the same thing. So what is the difference between bitcoin and blockchain? Other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are sub-applications of blockchain technology.

How Does a Blockchain Work?

First, Blockchain is a distributed database shared among the nodes of a computer network. It stores information in digital form. While a database usually structures its data in tables, a blockchain structures its data in blocks together. Blocks have a certain storage capacity and when filled they are closed and connected to the other block thus creating a data chain known as a “blockchain”. All new information following the newly added block is compiled into a newly created block, which will be added to the chain once populated.

In the blockchain, digital information is recorded and distributed, but data cannot be edited. In this way, a blockchain is the basis of immutable ledgers or transaction records that cannot be changed, deleted or destroyed. You have your personal signatures that you use while performing these operations. These are 256-digit signatures consisting of 1s and 0s. You have private and public keys while using the system. Blockchain is a system run by people. For example, when you make a money transfer, you do not need to deal with a bank or pay commissions to intermediary institutions. You only deal with the person to whom you will send the money. Although blockchain technology is based on freedom of expression, it can also turn into chaos when freedom of expression has no boundaries.

Imagine a company has a server group of 10,000 computers used to maintain a database that holds all of its customers’ account information. This company has a warehouse building that brings all these computers under one roof and has full control over each of these computers and all the information they contain. But imagine that the electricity is gone, the internet connection is broken or it’s hacked. Data may be lost or stolen.

Blockchains are known for their important role in crypto money systems such as Bitcoin to keep a secure and decentralized record of transactions. The most distinctive feature of blockchain is that it guarantees the security of a data record and establishes trust without the need for a trusted third party.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Blockchain

Advantages

• Cost reduction by eliminating third-party verification

• Transactions are secure, private and efficient

• Transparent technology

• Provides a banking alternative and a way to secure personal information for citizens of countries with unstable or underdeveloped governments.

Disadvantages

• Significant technology cost associated with Bitcoin mining

• Low transactions per second

• History of use in illegal activities such as the dark web

• Regulation varies by jurisdiction and remains unclear

• Data storage limitations
